Receiving the Ancestors

Our ancestors continue to live within us, deep in the somatic unconscious, the shards of their unlived lives emerging-into-now by way of our sensitivities and gifts.

Their lost joy, broken dreams, and unfulfilled creativity have a way of taking up residency in our cell tissue, subtle bodies, and in our bellies and hearts.

As we enter into the human experience – descending downward into body, mud, roots, and Earth – these ancient ones begin to reappear: as symbol, image, feeling, and synchronicity. They have a way of shifting shapes in order to find us, through color, tree, water, lover and sound.

What is it that we’re carrying on their behalf? What dreams remain undreamed and unmanifested for them? What are their deepest longings? What secrets have they never been able to share?

What keeps them awake at night? What brings them alive and unleashes their creativity and unique essence? What visions are not permitted to take form? What visions of the divine within and of the divine world call them forth through our bodies once more?

What were they required to disown in order to fit in to a place that may have lost its sensitivity and soul? What emotions and wisdom became buried in the shadows? What story were they unable to live into, what feelings were they unable to feel?

In what ways are we being asked to be an open portal for re-emergence, re-enchantment, and revisioning? Do we have choice about what we carry forward and what we leave with them?

If we open to receive the offerings of the ancestors, an inner sanctuary forms where the trans-generational soul-material can be illuminated and transmuted. Within this inner structure, the seemingly solid lines between past, present, and future begin to fall away. There is a kind of sorting process that takes place, and the issues or challenges that we agree to continue to work in this life become clear. Some things are given to us to carry forward. Other things belong to the ancestors and are none of our business.

When we are “in the present moment,” we share the moment with the ancestral ones and the spirts of the Earth who are with us. Past, present, and future interpenetrate, opening the possibility of a perceiving separation and union in a new way. Paradoxically, melting time/space and merging with the ancestors helps to more clearly define our individuality. The illusion of self and other, being and becoming dissolves.

When we choose, accept and receive the energies of our ancestors with consciousness and humility we can experience our individual self as an emanation, a manifestation, an ornament of the Totality, both a singular and unified expression of clear-light nature. We are unique and differentiated, yes, while at the same time non-separate and one.
